Two generations of Roux in the Kitchen

One of the original line-up of chefs to cook at the launch three years ago, Michel Roux Jr returned to cook in the kitchen of Refettorio and he brought his incredibly talented daughter Emily too. It was a joy to watch two generations of the famous Roux dynasty work so collaboratively to produce a warming meal to usher in the changing season.

Michel Roux Jr and his daughter Emily rarely get the chance to cook together, now that Emily has her own restaurant, Caractère in Notting Hill, and Michel has his hands full with his own three restaurants. But on Wed 25th September, they both took time out for a shift at the Refettorio to feed almost 80 hungry – and expectant – guests.

First task of the day was to assess the contents of the Refettorio’s food delivery truck, from which they devised a delicious and nourishing autumn menu. Then they began chopping, slicing, stirring and seasoning to create the fresh and flavoursome first course – a soup made from roast cauliflower, courgette, tomato and cumin. Tender grilled chicken followed, accompanied by salsa verde, honey roasted carrots and rice. For pudding they served a sumptuous banana, date & walnut cake with homemade blackberry yoghurt and pineapple.

It was a huge thrill to host such a talented father and daughter team, and judging from the post-lunch smiles on the diners’ faces, they were pretty satisfied too.

It's lovely to be back and even better to bring Emily and show her the exciting work that goes on here. We've both really enjoyed the experience and will definitely be returning soon!
