For the vulnerable, isolated and homeless, Christmas can be the most difficult time of year. A staggering 1 million Britons will spend Christmas alone; while many others will rely on handouts from food banks to feed them and their families.
At Refettorio Felix, we strive to do more than just provide a Christmas lunch for our guests, who include rough sleepers, the homeless, older people and those with mental health issues and substance misuse issues. We will offer our guests a delicious multi-course feast and create a sense of celebration, making people feel warm and welcome and filling them with friendship and Christmas cheer.
We’ll deck our hall in decorations, recruit carol singers, and prepare not one but two delicious festive lunches with all the trimmings. All of our guests will receive a thoughtful and appropriate Christmas gift useful for the year ahead.
This will be done in true ‘Refettorio’ style, focused on combating food waste and social exclusion. Volunteers will serve our guests food at the table, and chefs will be sure to incorporate surplus ingredients into our festive feasts. We’re also striving to have a plastic-free Christmas, reflected in everything from our table settings to our decorations.
Outside of our festive-themed get-togethers, December remains an especially busy time for all the services at St Cuthbert’s Centre, as we welcome even more individuals in from the cold and give them warming food, clothing and much-needed emotional support. Help us to make 2019 a better and more hopeful year.
It costs us £10 to offer one of our guests a special festive experience including delicious food and drink, entertainment and gifts. Give a thoughtful gift this Christmas and donate to our project, helping us to help those in need have the best Christmas yet.
